SVN’s fireside chat with Marcos Wescamp, Johnathan Harris and Aaron Koblin

The recent firerside chat at Signal v’s Noise with three of the most innovative artists/designers working in the area of information visualisation is an enlightening read. Each has their own particular perspective and approach to ‘infoviz’ as Wescamp puts it. Harris is interested in the ‘humanity of the web’ which might be excavated through the visualisation of hidden data. Koblin describes himself as an artist eventhough his background is in game design, and Wescamp admits to being an ‘interaction designer’ with a strong interest in information visualisation because it provides ‘a little bit of every world, art, visual problem solving and engineering’.

Their discussion the nature of their creative process is interesting, especially the role of experimentation and paper-based sketching in realising their ideas. While it is evident that typographic design is not a major focus for any of them, it forms an integral part of both Harris (Daylife, We Feel Fine) and Wescamp’s work. Harris and Koblin both note the impact that Wescamp’s Newsmap had from a design perspective.

I think one thing that Newsmap demonstrates, which is important, is the fractal qualities of good design. For instance, you can glance at the grid and instantly see the largest stories overall, and the relative importance of sport vs. business, but then you can move closer and see the individual stories that compose the grid. Those orders of scale are important.” [Johnathan Harris, June 5, 2007]

In my view, whether consciously or unconsciously, Harris and Wescamp are breaking new ground in screen based typography and there are many inherent attributes within their work that signal innovative if complex future directions for the discipline.

ATypI 2007 talks on screen typography

Posted on June 22nd, 2007 in General, Legibility, Web Typography by admin

The TypeTech programme at the forthcoming ATypI Brighton 2007 has a couple of interesting presentations about the more technical and scientific aspects of screen typography.

Most notable are:
Ted Harrison and Yuri Yarmola, Font Lab
Flash Photofonts - the Holy Grail of Web Typography?

Simon Daniels, Microsoft
Web font embedding rides again!

In the main programme, there are many big names in the line-up, including the likes of Matthew Carter, but most of the presentations focus on traditional typography. Other speakers that may be of interest include David Crow, John Berry and the keynote has yet to be announced.

On the legibility and accessibility side of things, Kevin Larson from Microsoft with his aptly titled presentation Better than a poke in the eye also looks promising considering Larson’s previous work in this area.

First Vis Comm degree show at IADT

Posted on June 2nd, 2007 in General by admin

Our first graduate show of the new honours Degree in Visual Communications at IADT opened on Thursday night. It was a great success! The work is of a really high standard and explores a very interesting range of subjects and themes, including the social impact of technology on our daily lives, Ireland’s changing cultural and social landscape in a time of prosperity, and a variety of other topics such as design ethics, psychogeography, panic attacks and student resources on part-time work.

The show is notable for the depth and breadth of the content in the projects and how they are explored and communicated on a range of graphic design platforms – through print, screen and spatial media. The interdisciplinary nature of the work is distinguishing factor that underpins the course at IADT as well as the high standard of typography in a graphic design context. The show runs until June 7th and is well worth a visit. Also, check out our new course website, which contains links to graduate online portfolios.
